Argh. I do not have the original source for this image…but it was too great not to post. Selfies have been going on way before there were even cameras…there’s something both reassuring and unsettling about our compulsion to recreate our own image. Oh man. This is getting too deep. Regardless, I love this.

There’s a fantastic interview over on the Design Files with Australian-based book designer extraordinaire Allison Colpoys. Her diversity of style and tone are truly impressive, as well as her scope of work. What an aesthetic!

The culture of filmmaking is antagonistic toward chaos. Most movies are designed to maximize order and structure. But if you come into a production with a preordained vision of how everything is going to be, you risk squeezing out spontaneity and ending up with this sanitized thing. I see my role as guiding the ship without controlling it too tightly, discovering the film by making it.

NPR

Melanie: Seriously, the Great Gatsby soundtrack is so GOOD. Funny that it's released on NPR.

Elyse: NPR does a lot of great "First Listens."

Melanie: Oh really? I always want to listen to NPR and then it makes me feel overwhelmed with all the shit I should be caring about that I dont even know about.

Elyse: Hahahahahahahahahaha, totally.

A video by Joe Nicolosi and his mom has me IN STITCHES this morning. I guess Joe’s mom had never seen the Matrix so he asked her to watch it and then retell the story, in detail, resulting in this short video called “The Matrix Retold by Mom” and it’s too funny. I love everything about it.

Magpie comes a calling
Drops a marble from the sky
Tin roof sounds alarm
And wake up child
Let this be a warning says the magpie to the morning
Don’t let this fading summer pass you by…

Oh hey, Tauruses. Taurusi? That looks weird. Whatever. IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY MONTH! So happy birthday to you! Some of my very favorite folks are Tauruses - and they’re good people. So let’s discuss.
Taurus—the bull—is an Earth sign. I went with greener hues, but wanted to still keep everything fresh and modern. Tauruses are known for being dependable, clever and persistent. They’re usually great in business. Their patience and resourcefulness really add to their whole “feet on the ground” mentality. They’re not daydreaming, absent-minded folk. Nope. Not one dot. Practical. Determined. When they put their minds to something, it’s going to happen. Period. Oh, they also make super faithful friends.
Happy Birthday, Taurus! Keep sticking it to the man.

Gosh, I just really love Pinterest. Sure I get to find great products and fun design ideas, but mostly I love discovering new illustrators and artsits who think differently. These illustrations are by Australian-based artist Sandra Eterovic. I saw the top image “Kitty and Darth Vader” floating around on Pinterest, and when I clicked the image and read that the work is supposed to be about “how we choose to present ourselves, what we reveal/conceal and some basic undeniable truths beneath.” Simply beautiful. Here’s a link to her Etsy shop.

Ready to feel like a shitty parent? Graphic designer David LaFerriere has been drawing on his children’s sandwich bags (and photographing them) since 2008. That’s almost 1,100 altogether. Check them ALL out over on Flickr.

First, Fahrenheit 451, reintroduced by designer Elizabeth Perez. In her words, it is “a novel about a dystopian future where books are outlawed and firemen burn any house that contains them. The story is about suppressing ideas, and about how television destroys interest in reading literature.”

And what would be more apt than a book cover and binding that reflects that horrific world? The one becomes a match, and the spine becomes a striking surface, powerfully reinforcing the core message of the novel.
